2009 HSOB SQUASH REPORT TO HSOB SPORTS CLUB AGM
In 2009 HSOB Squash was a pinnacle year. For the first time in our history we achieved success on a regional scale winning the annual Hawkes Bay/Gisborne Clubs G & H Training Pot, known previously as the Lion Brown Pot. On the national scene we had our first men’s team take out the National E Grade Superchamps in a convincing manner.
Still on the National scene, we had some exceptional individual performances. Bruce Taiapa won the Nga Hau E Wha Maori Squash Championships for the junior boys division and Parearau Kutia was runner up in the NZ Junior Championships Under 11 girls.
During the year our in-house club events were well supported as too were our two open events, the Queens Birthday Open and HSOB Masters. The Mercantile event also proved popular as was the fundraising invitation event. Our club champs took on a new format, which meant more intense and fierce competition over all of the grades. This format was appropriate given the high number of graded and competitive players.
Our junior programme maintained strong numbers at varying degrees of competency. A huge amount of effort and time is invested in our juniors with a focus on complimenting their squash development with providing a pathway towards personal growth and enhanced self esteem.
Three teams were sent to National Graded Superchamps, D, E and F Grade men. Competition was explosive and careful planning and preparedness for this event needs to be at the forefront of sending future teams, both in regard to financial planning and individual strength and fitness – should we wish to be competitive.
Typically our squash season and what we have to offer would not be possible without the tremendous support we have from our sponsors. We are extremely grateful to Turanga Health, Tairawhiti District Health, NZ Community Trust, Bay Stonecraft, Olsen Shipping, Oceanbridge, Village Butchery, Allan Parker, Eastland Scaffolding, Turanga FM, Te Runanga o Turanganui a Kiwa, Emerre & Hathaway and Turanga Ararau.
Our conscientious and dedicated team of volunteers are the core of our squash club. With no hesitation this team are often if not always at the forefront of cleaning, kitchen, baking, coaching, tournament control, fundraising activities and more. We cannot thank these people enough for their generous demonstrations of support.
We concluded our year at yet another fundraising activity with squash parents, whänau, players and supporters joining our efforts as Rhythm and Vines Bus monitors. Whilst the financial benefits of these events are truly appreciated, the spirit and camaraderie that is created contributes to awesome club spirit and atmosphere.
The 2010 programme has commenced and we look forward to achieving more on the squash scene throughout the year.
